taking the time just to stay Drina and I were playing music and singing together and we got married and we always had music in our house and so when the kids were born they were always hearing music and they were singing almost from the time they could speak and singing harmonies with each other without knowing what they were and so if one person started singing a song the others would sing harmonies well and I think over the time they everybody just learned to develop their own lead voice and everybody learned how to sing all the other harmonies it's just a very organic development keep our babysitting when I wear time in love one night my my son who's 19 months old he woke up in the middle of the night like 1:30 in the morning he wouldn't go back to sleep and so I sat in the living room and was trying to get him to go back to sleep and then I couldn't go back to sleep and just kind of started writing and it was one of those songs that just came out all at once on the paper and I showed it to Kyle the next day and he's like I would make such a cool bluegrass song so I was trying to figure out a way to incorporate a lot of the higher more piercing female harmonies into a pretty standard hard-driving bluegrass song we came into this project we had a lot of awesome material we finally narrowed it down to twelve great songs and decided at the last minute that we would switch out one of our tunes and try to cover the cup song we just thought it would be really cool to try to bluegrass that song and put our version of it on the album and it's it's super cool I think it turned out to be my favorite song on the album I got my ticket for the long way round two bottle whiskey for the way and I sure would like some sweet company and I'm leaving tomorrow what do you say when I'm gone when I'm having Kenny Malone on the cup song was I mean he was the most perfect fit for that song one of my nephew's walked up to him and it's like Kenny do you play the drums and he goes oh no I play the world I got my ticket for the long way it's got mountains it's got rivers it's got sights to give you shivers when I found out that I won the IVM a momentum award for female vocalist of the year I was shocked because I didn't know that I was even nominated for it until yeah after I found out that I won the award and yeah I wasn't expecting it at all it was a huge surprise and it was so exciting like it was the first award I've ever won at all so so that and of itself was really great but having it come from IBMA it was really exciting planes die have we flying cars that have we if I'm ever gonna have a hard ever be blue I gotta have you what inspires me most as a singer is the random music choices that I listen to I listen to Pandora stations of artists that I don't even know the name of it's kind of taking me out of that whole straight bluegrass genre voice vote vocally and into a kind of my own thing they just go together you and me I can't see mine without the other five years ago we were playing at Silver Dollar City and this guy was playing in another band and he and Melissa got a little interested in each other and before long he asked to marry my daughter and that's Kyle and he's been with us for about six years now they've been married five years and he just totally changed the band he was the most wonderful addition ever he brought true bluegrass into what we were doing was just a phenomenal banjo player and multi-instrumentalist as well one thing I thought about when I met that Bank Astor's was a piece I learned from Sammy Schuyler from an instructional video he said that he listened to a Tony rice album that didn't have any banjo on it and he just played along and put his own banjo in there and that was kind of how he learned to play and so when I joined the banking stirs they never had a banjo player and so it was that similar situation for me but in the full-time band aspect we really are surprised at how far the music has come we it's just been one surprise after another and one blessing after another and we just are really enjoying the ride in through steps bed
